Family Recipes

BELOVED FAMILY RECIPES …

Learning Intention:

Students are to think of a family recipe with a backstory and then write and essay around that dish.

Students will share tales of beloved dishes, the mere thought of which can make mouths water (e.g. “As the steam from the macaroni rose, the smell seemed as if it had fallen from heaven,” writes Mark St. John Pete about his grandmother's macaroni and cheese, eaten around a full table in Washington, D.C.).

Others may focus on less, uh, beloved foods (e.g. “I think tamales do not rot because they can be in a fridge for weeks and look the same,” says Rolando Fuentes, who lost his taste for the bundled packages of corn masa, from his mother's native El Salvador, as a result of what you might call overexposure.).

Ideally, we would like to publish recipes and their accompanying stories that result in a cookbook of global cuisine with a heartfelt touch, revealing that storytelling may be the most important step in any recipe.

Writing these food-focused stories will help students become better writers, but it will also allow for them to delve into their identities and hone their reporting skills with their families, reinforcing important connections.

In order to fill holes in their narratives, many students may need to reach out to older family members for more information.

When students don’t know a detail or an ingredient, they will need to ask. (e.g.”Talk to your dad about it.”  And they'd say, “Well I did talk to my dad. We had a conversation, and he told me all this stuff. I had no idea.”).

Family story:
The reason why this is such a great family recipe is because when my mum would have her birthday she would have a big KaeseKuchen and share it with the whole family.  On hard working days, she would also come back home to have a slice of cake and a coffee.  Another reason why it is a family recipe is because in the weekend, our family would come over to have a talk with some coffee and cake and have time to see each other.

Mix the yeast, sugar and water together in a bowl.  Leave in a warm place for 10 minutes until frothy.

Recipe For Summer

Take some sunscreen, only a drip.
Mix with water quickly.
Boil it to make it warm and bubbly.
Take some blinding light and chuck in some sand.  Place in some delicious ice cream.
Mix it slowly to make it nice and creamy.
Let it set over Autumn.
Expand over Winter.
Form life in Spring.
Then enjoy in Summer.

LEADERSHIP BY JONATHAN VOSS

As part of our leadership project for this term, we looked at what aspects of leadership looked liked for our class.

This is what our school leaders from Room 1 think:

Friendship

Friendship is very good to have between someone because f you fall over, you will have someone to help you get up!  It also is very good, because if you feel down or sad, they help you feel up and happy!
- Chloe Keene

It is encouraging everybody and helping them to do their best.  Friendship is looking out for each other and making sure everyone is involved.  It is sharing ideas and making sure everyone gives everything a go!
- Mekayla Knight

Having friends means they should encourage you.  Be caring and help each other.  It also means you're not lonely.  But the most important thing is to treat them how you want to be treated.
- Kalim Thomson

Success

Success at school is very helpful because you meet new friends and also you will have a better chance of getting into university.  Plus you will have a good CV to hand in and get a job!
- Chloe Keene

Success is where you can improve and feel proud about what you succeed.  You get high achievement. You need a good attitude to succeed and last of all, you need to focus.
- Kalim Thomson

Team Spirit

It is kind of the same as friendship.  You encourage your team and make sure they give it their best. Congratulate them or make them feel good.  You make sure everyone is participating.

Facts about Eliza ...

Eliza McCartney is a famous pole vaulter.

She holds the record for NZ and Oceania at 4.82 m.

Eliza started pole vaulting in 2011.

She won a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Her mum was a gymnast and her dad was a high jumper.

Her pole vaulter coach was called Jeremy McCall.

She loved playing netball before she started pole vaulting.

She was born in Auckland on December 1996.

Eliza won another bronze medal at the Halberg Awards 2016.

Why she is a leader ...

I think Eliza McCartney is an inspirational leader because she never gives up. She is very fit and trains six days a week and 3 to 4 hours each day.

Eliza has a lot of courage and momentum. Before she went to the Rio 2016 Olympics she said: My goal is to have the best technical competition I have.

Eliza McCartney pushes herself to her limits. Even if she fails she tries harder next time. She is always smiling and is very happy all the time. That’s why I think Eliza is an inspirational leader.

Pole vaulting:
Yelena Isinbayeva set the women’s highest pole vault at 5.05m at the 2008 Olympics. The flexible pole used to be made of stiff materials like bamboo or aluminium now a days it is made from fibreglass or carbon fibre. You have to have a fast speed to go over the horizontal bar. Women did not compete in pole vault in the Olympics until 2000. The pole they use to go over the bar is 3.05 to 5.30 metres long.
In the old days the ancient Greeks used pole vault to go over enemy walls, they also used pole vault to go on animals like bulls and horses.

How to Hold A Pole:
First the vaulter places their hands spaced apart on the end of the pole. You have to hold the pole in a vertical position. Then you slowly lower the tip when you approach the pit and take off.

Term 1: Weeks 1 - 4

                             Who Are You

In these first few weeks our class has been working on a project called 'Who Are You'. We were given a bunch of little writing projects and had to complete at least 4 of them. Here are a few examples.

Dear Nana and Poppa
First Day Back At School

About my teacher:

My teacher is called Moana Moleni (Mrs.Moleni).  She has short caramel hair that is cut into a bob. Mrs Moleni has 2 children that are 16 and 18.  Mrs Moleni has been a teacher at other schools for 15+ years!!! She is really nice and is a great teacher and I’m so happy that she is my teacher! Her favourite colour is blue and she also loves to play basketball. She is part maori and she is also going to be my Kapa Haka teacher.
My first day:
I loved catching up with my old friends and I loved meeting all of the new students. I am so HAPPY that I am finally a year 7 so that means I get given a lot more opportunities. I’m kind of sad because all of my friends from last year are in room 2 and I’m in room 1 so we are split up into different classes, but we still hang out at morning tea’s and lunchtimes.
Conclusion:
Anyway...I gotta go finish my work but I really miss you and I can’t wait to visit you! And I want to wish Nana a happy birthday for February 10th, I hope you have the BEST day ever!!! Lots of love your granddaughter,Lily. Xoxo

My Favourite Teacher

Miss Malone is my favourite teacher for many reasons. Here are ten:

  1. She has a really funny-sometimes rude-sense of humor
  2. She gives people her own funny nicknames eg. she calls Amelia- Amelia Sqeualia, Squealia and Squeals
  3. Her handwriting is soooo nice
  4. Whenever she relieve teaches us, we always do stuff that normal teachers don’t and it’s always really fun. I especially like writing with her
  5. She always dyes her hair different pretty colours. At the moment it’s purple
  6. She always gets into the mufti day spirit
  7. She’s really good at doing and teaching art and always finds something fun for us to do for it
  8. She’s very cheeky but I’m not going to give an example or I would probably ruin her reputation
  9. Whenever I need a writing, reading or maths tip, she’ll always give me a really good answer.
  10. She taught me in extension literacy and it was really fun because she’s a good teacher and we always had something to do. Also, she always let me and Amelia do our own writing thing

There are probably more but those are are the top 10 reasons why Miss Malone is my favourite teacher.

My Family and Percy
Percy is my dog. He is very special to me because I got him for my 11th birthday in 2015 when he was only 8 weeks old.  Before Percy came to us, his name was Walnut.  He had a brother named Peanut who we almost got but he was a little too bossy and wasn't good for first time pet owners.  He also had a sister named Pandora but she was already taken.

We ended up with Percy because when mum was picking out a dog and Walnut (Percy) walked right up to mum and sat on her foot.  Percy arrived at our house on the 24th of August, a week after my birthday.

Percy’s full name is Sir Percival Brian Jones.  He got his name because mum wanted to call him Sir Percival and dad and I wanted to call him Brian so his name was sir Percival Brian.  Then we came up with the name Jones to add on, and his name ended up Sir Percival Brian Jones.  His nickname being Percy and his initials being PBJ.

Percy has beautiful fur coloured like caramel.  He also has white feet and a white underbelly with black tips on his nose and tail.  Percy’s eyes are as brown as chocolate with eyebrows as expressive as a human face.

Percy is also turning 2 in June on the 24th.  I chose Percy for this task because he is special to me in many ways.
